Acharei-Kedoshim
R. Nachman of Breslov on Parashat Acharei-Kedoshim, read on Shabbat Acharei-Kedoshim · Lag B'Omer week — with one of this week's three questions for the two of you.
The thirty-third day of the Omer is Lag B'Omer — the day of joy in the middle of an otherwise austere counting. Bonfires are lit in honor of Rashbi (R. Shimon bar Yochai), the master of the hidden light. The bonfires are not just commemoration. They are statements. Each fire says: there is a flame inside the soul that is normally hidden, and tonight, briefly, we let it become visible. Rebbe Nachman returns again and again to this conviction. The work of refinement during Sefirah is not extinguishing what is in us. It is uncovering what was always there. The fire we light on Lag B'Omer is the fire we already are. The work is to clear what kept it hidden.
What is one piece of fire inside you — a passion, a love, a calling — that you keep mostly hidden, even from me?
