Nitzavim-Vayelech

R. Nachman of Breslov on Parashat Nitzavim-Vayelech, read on Shabbat Nitzavim-Vayelech · Erev Rosh Hashanah — with one of this week's three questions for the two of you.

R. Nachman of Breslov
רבי נחמן מברסלב
Likutei Moharan · 'Today, you stand'

The parsha opens with one of the great verses of Jewish life: Atem nitzavim hayom kulchem lifnei Hashem Eloheichem — 'You are standing today, all of you, before the Lord your God.' The Sages dwell on the word hayom — today. Not 'in days past.' Not 'on Sinai.' Today, this very day, you are standing. Rebbe Nachman heard this with his characteristic intensity. There is no day that is not, for the soul that wakes to it, the day that everything starts over. Today the past loses its grip. Today the future receives a new shape. Today the covenant is renewed. The night before Rosh Hashanah, this teaching is not a metaphor — it is the actual posture in which we are about to stand.

One of this week's three questions

Think back across this past year that is closing. Name one thing you are quietly relieved is ending. Name one thing you will miss.
