Tomer Devorah · the test of every middah is the tongue

Tazria and Metzora describe tzaraat — a spiritual skin condition that the Sages traced to lashon hara, harmful speech. The healing was not just penance. The healer was a kohen, the diagnosis required quarantine, the return required offerings. The whole architecture says: speech that wounds another wounds the speaker too, and the repair has weight. Cordovero, in Tomer Devorah, draws the underlying point. The tongue is the truest test of every middah. We can practice patience in our hearts, mercy in our minds, humility in our intentions — but the test is whether they survive the trip to our lips. The Sefirah we are working on this week, whatever it is, only counts if it shows up in the way we speak to the person across from us.

One of this week's three questions

Of all the middot you would say I am genuinely working on — which one is most visible in how I speak to you, and which one tends to disappear by the time it gets to my mouth?
