Vayishlach

The Lubavitcher Rebbe on Parashat Vayishlach, read on Shabbat Vayishlach · Erev Chanukah — with one of this week's three questions for the two of you.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe
הרבי מליובאוויטש
Likutei Sichot · the act of lighting comes first

We are about to enter the eight days of Chanukah. The Rebbe, in many sichot on this season, returns to a small detail of the original miracle that we sometimes pass over. The kohanim entered the Temple, found one small jar of pure oil — enough for one day — and lit the menorah anyway. Knowing it would not last. Knowing they would not have the resources to relight it the next day. They lit it anyway, because now the menorah needed to be lit. The miracle of the eight days came after — but only because they lit the first day in trust. Sometimes the act of trust precedes the visible miracle. You kindle first. The light lasts second. This is true of every small light we light in difficult conditions.

One of this week's three questions

Tell me about a time, in our marriage, when one of us 'lit a candle' that we didn't think would last — that we lit anyway because the moment called for it. What happened to it?
