Vaetchanan
The Lubavitcher Rebbe on Parashat Vaetchanan, read on Shabbat Vaetchanan · Shabbat Nachamu — with one of this week's three questions for the two of you.
This is Shabbat Nachamu — the Shabbat of Comfort, the first of the seven weeks of consolation that lead from Tisha B'Av all the way to Rosh Hashanah. The haftarah opens with one of the most quietly powerful verses in Tanakh: nachamu, nachamu ami — comfort, comfort My people. The word is doubled. The Rebbe, in a teaching on this Shabbat, dwells on that doubling. Pain comes once. Consolation comes twice. The world is built so that the second wave of healing is always larger than the first wave of grief. This is not naïve optimism. It is the Rebbe's quiet, structural conviction: God's response to mourning is never a balance — it is always an exceeding.
Looking at the past year of our life together — name a wound that closed with more healing than the wound itself had cost. (Take a minute. They are easy to miss.)
