Bereshit
The Lubavitcher Rebbe on Parashat Bereshit, read on Shabbat Bereshit · After Simchat Torah — with one of this week's three questions for the two of you.
On Simchat Torah we did something curious. We finished the Torah — V'zot HaBracha, the final words Moshe spoke to Israel — and we did not put the scroll away. We immediately rolled it back to the beginning and read Bereshit bara Elohim. We have read these words a hundred times. And yet on this Shabbat, the Rebbe insists, every reading of Bereshit is the actual beginning. Not because the Torah is different. Because we are. We are a year older, a year more honest, a year more worn by what the past year cost us — and a year more able to receive what comes next. Bereshit is not a story we are reading. It is a possibility we are entering.
What is one specific way you are different than you were last Bereshit? (Take a minute. The change is real, even if quiet.)
