Tetzaveh

The Sfat Emet on Parashat Tetzaveh, read on Shabbat Tetzaveh — with one of this week's three questions for the two of you.

The Sfat Emet
שפת אמת
On Tetzaveh · the garments of service

Tetzaveh describes the bigdei kehunah — the priestly garments — in extraordinary detail. The blue robe with bells along its hem, the breastplate with twelve engraved stones, the headplate of pure gold. Sfat Emet teaches that these garments are not decoration. They are the kohen — they are the role he steps into. When he puts them on, he is no longer just himself. He becomes the priest. The clothes do not pretend at function; they confer it. Each of us, in marriage, has garments too. The small ways we dress up — physically, but more importantly, in our manner, our tone, our presence — are how we step into being the spouse we are trying to be. These are not pretense. They are how we become what we mean to be.

One of this week's three questions

What is one specific 'garment' I put on for you — a tone, a posture, a small effort — that helps me become the spouse I want to be?
