Re'eh

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch on Parashat Re'eh, read on Shabbat Re'eh · Rosh Chodesh Elul approaching — with one of this week's three questions for the two of you.

Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch
רש״ר הירש
Commentary on Devarim · the daily choosing

The parsha opens with a startling line: Re'eh anochi notein lifneichem ha-yom berachah u'klalah — 'See, I set before you today, blessing and curse.' Hirsch reads this with characteristic seriousness. The choice between blessing and curse is not a one-time event. It is ha-yom — today, this day, every day. Sinai was not the choice you made once and never had to make again. It is the choice you make again every morning when your feet touch the floor. Blessing and curse are not handed to you as fate. They are placed before you as an offer. To choose, again and again, is what it means to be Jewish — and what it means to be married. The covenant is renewed at every breakfast.

One of this week's three questions

Name one small choice you made this week that quietly leaned us toward blessing. Name one that leaned us toward something less.
